Although all content can belong to a hierarchical classification system (eg. "Sport" or "Showbiz"), sometimes those classifications are too rigid. For example, a story about David Beckham would be classified as Sport while a story about Posh Spice would be Showbiz - yet the two clearly deserve to be linked. To solve this problem, inframes.com developed the concept of Lateral Linking, a way of forging a relationship between content items which may not be immediately obvious but which presents the site subscriber with a number of paths or "clickstreams" through the website. More importantly, it presents the webmaster with valuable information about how subscribers use the website.
