About us

We are a small web company in Reading, and we have been doing this since 1999. Several of our clients have been with us for more than twenty years, through three or four rebuilds of their website and, in a couple of cases, through changes of ownership. Nobody stays with a supplier that long out of politeness.

Who does the work

Jon Ewing is the co-founder and your first point of contact. He became a designer and developer after years working as a writer and editor, which is why the words on a site get taken as seriously as the design, and why he would rather explain something plainly than impressively.

In addition, along with Jon’s assistant, Artie, inframes draws on the skills of a tight group of trusted pros who have worked with us over the years. They handle specialisms including various types of coding, graphic design, video, 3D modelling and data work. We keep a record of the spec of each client’s website, so its intricacies aren’t being carried round in a single person’s head. That way it’s always possible to hand over the reins to someone else when the original developer isn’t available.

What we are not

We are not an agency, and we are not going to tell you we are award winning or visionary. We do not have a house style that every client’s site ends up wearing, which some firms sell as a strength and we would rather describe accurately: your site should look like your business rather than like ours.

There is also work we turn down. If you do not believe a website will help your business, we are the wrong people, because the arrangement only works when both sides think the thing is worth doing.

Twenty-six years is only useful if you have kept up

Longevity in this trade can mean experience or it can mean building sites the way they were built in 2010, so it is worth saying what has actually changed.

The largest shift is that websites used to be islands and are now part of a network. The interesting work now is connecting a site to whatever else a business runs on, so that new customers get automatically tagged in a segmented mailing list (assuming they have opted in), enquiries get channeled to the right person on the sales team, and a report that somebody used to copy and paste by hand each month writes itself. That work saves real hours, every week, in businesses where nobody has hours to spare.

The rest has changed too. The phone is the main event rather than an afterthought. Security is a constant background task rather than an occasional worry. Search has grown a second half, in which the aim is to be the source an AI assistant quotes rather than merely a link in a list. And the tools we build with are not the ones we used three years ago, let alone thirteen.

What clients say

Jon has been managing my website for more years than I can remember. Extremely helpful and efficient. Any updates or changes are always done in a timely manner. Highly recommended.

Where we are

We are based in Reading and work with businesses anywhere. Some clients are ten minutes away and some we have never met, which has never seemed to matter much.
